Certificate of European Studies

The Certificate of European Studies (CES) is a university certificate awarded after successful completion of one semester of study at Sciences Po Strasbourg. It is taught exclusively in English and aims at enabling international students with little or no prior skills in the French language to gain access to the excellence of a French Grande Ecole’s programme of study.

By combining lectures, seminars, field trips and educational visits, the CES focuses on Europe in a global perspective, while also introducing students to the French language and culture. Thanks to Sciences Po Strasbourg’s long-standing partnership with European institutions such as the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, international students will therefore have a unique opportunity to gain both theoretical and practical understanding of Europe from the very heart of its capital.

Intended audience : International exchange and non-exchange students

The Certificate of European Studies is intended for international students who are enrolled in a university abroad for the purpose of obtaining a degree and who have validated the equivalent of two semesters (60 ECTS credits) at their home university, preferably, but not necessarily, in the following fields of study Law, Economics, Political Science, International Relations and Contemporary History.

Students must attest to their level of English language proficiency (B2 level minimum). No particular proficiency in French is required; the CES is intended primarily for students with a beginner or intermediate level of French (A1-A2).

The Certificate of European Studies can be taken by students who come as part of an exchange between their university and Sciences Po Strasbourg or by non-exchange students.

Program of study

The Certificate of European Studies can be taken in semester 1 or semester 2.

The program begins each semester with an intensive French course.

During the semester, students must take French language courses, 4 compulsory courses related to Europe (depending on the semester: History of European integration, Political Sociology of Europe, Cultural Policy in Europe, The EU and the World Economy, etc.) and a seminar coupled with educational visits to European institutions. In addition, they choose 2 optional courses and participate in a study trip (Frankfurt, Brussels, Luxembourg...).

In the first semester, the internship starts at the beginning of September; courses and exams are completed before the Christmas vacations.

In the second semester, the internship begins in early January; courses and exams are completed by the end of May.

Your entire application will be done on the MoveOn application. The maximum number of students that can enroll in this program is 25, in order to guarantee the quality of the interaction between students and teachers.
